OOA Show Episode 132, Mother Nature's in a Bad Mood
Friday May 10, 2013
Friday May 10, 2013
Even when she's in a bad mood, Mother Nature remains beautiful.
Too many news stories this week involving death. We talk about and post these death stories to help others understand when we venture into the wild, it is just that, and to be prepared for anything. A simple day hike, family camping trip, or flat-water paddle session can turn from fun to dangerous in moments. What is most beautiful and alluring about wilderness areas can also be the most dangerous. The ol' Scout motto remains the best advice when courting Mother Nature, "Be Prepared."

Ogden Sunrise as seen from the Bonneville Shoreline Trail Every sport has it's season. Right now, it's Everest time. By now, most of heard of the "brawl on Everest" which included three prominent alpinists, but we hadn't heard the point of view from the most famous climber involved, Ueli Steck. Outside Magazine posted Ueli's version late last night, "Brawl On Everest: Ueli Steck's Story." While Alpinist Magazine is waiting on more information before publishing an article about the brawl, Rock & Ice didn't hesitate and posted this piece on Tuesday, "TNB: Mayhem: Crawling, Balling, and Brawling On The Everest Soap Opera" In Other News: Todd to the Top with a Beer and a Bear - Circa 2011 Outdoor Retailer Show. Climbing and Ogden go together like Sharma and Spain. So, we're thankful for the sixth year in a row, the Weber State University Outdoor Program has organized the Ogden Climbing Festival! This year's fest was the best attended since inception, and we believe GEAR:30 had a little help with that. Besides rockin' the fest as the Title Sponsor, GEAR:30 also helped kick off the weekend with a special Will Calton Presentation: Preparing for and Surviving Everest, complete with sweet schwag and free food and beer from Roosters Brewing Co. All good things must come to an end, so we're sad this year's climbing festival is over. We're already dreamin' of next year. News:

OOA Show Episode 128, Mountain Man Down
Friday Apr 05, 2013
Friday Apr 05, 2013
You know you're hardcore when you're snowshoes are bright purple.
Despite this episode's title, we don't chat too much mountain man news. Instead, we burned a significant amount of the show incorrectly answering Outside Magazine's "Test Your Survival Skills"quiz! Let's just say, we might not be the first to give advice when it comes to landing a distressed Cessna, saving a child from a subway car, or stopping a vehicle careening down a mountain without breaks. Click here to take the test yourself. Good luck, hope you live.

Darwinism on display at Antelope Island. This is what happens when you shake a fence and throw rocks at a buffalo. It pins you, embarrasses you, and leaves you to reevaluate your food-chain status. Anyway, turns out this brilliant guy was OK, and maybe only received a bruised ego, we hope. News:

Thursday Mar 21, 2013
Thursday Mar 21, 2013
A pair of industrious Utah beavers are being heralded for their part in saving a diesel spill from contaminating Willard Bay. The semi-aquatic rodents with mad damn-building skills became saturated in fuel. Wildlife officials have captured and transported the pair to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah, where they seem to be stable and recovering. Good on ya, Beavers! News:
